Book Review: Mr Loverman by Bernadine Evaristo
Rating: 4 ⭐⭐⭐⭐
I am back again with a new review and I just couldn't wait to share this one with you all... After reading Mr Loverman by Bernadine Evaristo in January, I (for a second time) fell in love with Evaristo's writing. Her writing is so witty and powerful and has the most exquisite way of making you adore every single character that she chooses to write about. The characterisation and passion that seeps through every page is truly breathtaking, but at the same time incredibly human. You feel as if you personally know each character that makes an appearance. There is one character in particular that you just cannot forget: 74 year old Antiguan born and bred Barrington Walker (aka Barry). A character that is so endearing with so many stories and experiences to share and this is his enamouring story...
About The Book:
Seventy-four year old, Antiguan born and bred, flamboyant Hackney personality Barry is known for his dapper taste and fondness for retro suits. He is a husband to Carmel, father to Donna and Maxine and grandfather to Daniel. But, for the past sixty years, he has been in a relationship with his childhood friend and soulmate, Morris. Whilst Barry's wife Carmel knows he has been cheating on her, little does she know what is really going on. When their marriage goes into meltdown, Barry has big choices to make that could change the course of his life forever...
Mr Loverman is a groundbreaking tale, exploring Britain's older Caribbean community, bursting with cultural myths and fallacies, and showing exactly how deep the consequences of prejudice and fear can be. Split between the first person narrative of Barry and the lyrical poetic voice of Carmel, Evaristo unveils the simultaneous decline of a couple's marriage as each of them come to terms with their own true inner feelings. This is a heartwarming tale about a character as cheeky and mischievous as any you will ever come across.
