Book Review: The Maid by Nita Prose

Rating: 4 ⭐⭐⭐⭐

The Maid by Nita Prose became a MUST read book for me after seeing it all over my bookstagram over the summer. I finally got round to reading it whilst on holiday back in September and initially, it took me a while to really get into the book. It felt like a slow burner, waiting for the main event to kick off. But, as the book progressed, I found myself more and more invested in each of the characters and I started to really enjoy it! It is definitely not one to give up on, if you start off feeling the same.

I have never really met a character like Molly before either. She is not like everyone else; she struggles with social skills and finds it difficult to interpret people's intentions. I wondered, whilst reading, if perhaps she was a neurodivergent character, but this is never fully revealed to the reader. But, regardless of this, I felt that her character really aided the whodunnit aspect of the book. Her goodhearted, trustworthy nature allows for even the reader's judgement to become misguided. You start to see the good in some of the very bad characters, leaving you to question who the killer may be. This allowed for the suspense to continue all the way to the end!

One my favourite things about this book had to come from Prose's witty, smart storytelling. There was a perfect mixture of everything within these pages. One minute the book will have you laughing out loud and the next it will be tugging at your heart strings. The mystery has so many layers to is as well that it will continue to have you second guessing yourself. Just when you think you've got it, another surprise is thrown straight into the narrative and you are straight back to square one. It is an absolutely remarkable debut novel!

And, with the second book soon to be released, I cannot wait to see what other mysteries Molly has been getting herself involved in...
